INTRODUCTION

Hi, my name is Lucy, welcome to my world.

It is a lively, colourful one, set largely in a small town in Ireland populated by a cast of unique and voluble characters.

My inner world is a vibrant, ever-changing fever dream, existing to reflect and reimagine the present. So I became an artist.

My art is driven by reality, daily life, and what it is to be human.

My interactions with the people around me, known or strangers, can trigger deep feelings as I am touched by the diverse situations, triumphs and problems faced day to day by human beings in the 21st century.

I want to draw the arrows which lead the viewer to see the world anew, my world and theirs.

A world of grand passions, and small triumphs. Of the tiny moments and encounters which can alter someone’s day, or their life. To show that there is a map to compassion in the face of a hard world

But I will flip the coin too.

And show what it is to grieve, to feel lost, to feel alone. My art is also there to help people face the more painful realities of being a human, digital obsession, social isolation, poor mental health. I want to be a voice for everything I see.

In my art I use colour, movement and composition to build this voice. It is amazing what the simple act of making a mark on paper can say. I begin with one and then build a sentence, a paragraph, a story.

Art speaks to people on many levels. But recognising a part of your humanity, your world, and watching it explode out of a canvas is really powerful. I want my art to provoke reactions, start conversations, to reach human beings and to change their world.

View here the laws of nature. The hunter and the hunted trapped on a page. Shapes and lines speak of teeth, swift death on instinct. The movement across this piece is like the dart of a predator from the undergrowth. There is a sense of attack, run or die. Yet how could something so colourful be so dangerous?

This artwork demonstrates how our past pushes up through the earth of history into our present, like determined Dandylion roots. What came before influences our present, physically and emotionally.
The Celtic cross symbol is repeated as a potent marker of our past. Solid, carved with care, they speak of faith, resilience and timelessness.
Ancient earth tones mix with the bright, almost florescent blues of modernism creating a painting of juxtapositions.
How you feel about your own past will probably influence how you feel about this piece of art.

Jacob's Ladder

Genesis 28 v10-13
‘Jacob...taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the Lord, and he said: ‘I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.’
This reading and a sermon given by the Rev. Leonard Ruddock, inspired me to paint this artwork.
The scale symbolises the role of God in Jacob’s story and ours. The paint moves around the board, the marks emphasising the speed of change with the spindly ladder the only solid certainty, our link to heaven.
